I once saw the funniest, yet powerful advertisement on the subway. It really did have impact on me, because I never forgot it. It was a picture of a grubby guy chatting online pretending to be this drop dead gorgeous woman. Scary but true, this happens more then we care to believe.

• REALLY listen to them

First, find out as much information about the person you are chatting with. This seems very basic however if they are pretending to be someone they are not, they will eventually get confused. Listen to their story, does it stay the same? Does it change the more you chat? Does it match the profile they submitted? If they seem vague or are not quick to share information, beware!

Second, REALLY listen to them. I know this sounds silly but they will send clues of their intent. Make mental notes as to the type of questions they are asking you. A good friend of mine shared one of her online experiences. She once chatted with some guy who said in his profile, that he was looking for a long term relationship, however everything he talked about was of a sexual nature, A long term relationship was not his intent.

Finally, invest in a web cam. This is a great way to really see the person you are chatting with. I know that sharing photos is generally part of online dating however there is no guarantee the pics are really them. Furthermore, if you share your pics and you do not really know this person, you take that risk of them posting them on the internet, or altering them. Again not foolproof, but web cams allow you to see each other live while chatting. This same friend of mine said she found her online dating experiences were far more real and she felt she knew who she was chatting with.
